About Wutong Hub

Tucked away in Edinburgh’s Old Town, Wutong Hub is the kind of Chinese restaurant you almost want to keep to yourself. Cosy, modern, and wonderfully welcoming, it serves up authentic dishes that go far beyond the usual takeaway favourites. The menu offers a broad range of traditional flavors, with something to suit different diets and palates, making it an ideal stop for anyone keen to explore genuine Chinese flavours. Even the tableware is traditional Chinese, which adds a subtle but delightful touch to the dining experience. Expect to spend around £20 per person for a satisfying meal.

Our Review

Is Wutong Hub worth a visit?

My husband and I popped into Wutong Hub on a Thursday night at 8pm for a much-needed post-work date night, fueled by a craving for spicy comfort food and the hope of finding something genuinely authentic.

Inside, the restaurant strikes a lovely balance between Old Town character and the lively buzz you’d expect from being so close to the University. The space is split into two small dining halls, and the crowd was a cheerful mix of students, couples, families, and business diners. We were lucky to walk straight into a table midweek, but our pre-visit sleuthing suggested that weekends book up quickly.

What really stood out was the rhythm of the place. Takeaway orders were flying out of the kitchen, yet the staff handled both the in-house diners and delivery flow with impressive ease. That said, this is absolutely a place to eat in. Nothing compares to the aroma, sound, and theatre of a sizzling skillet arriving at your table.

The Must-Order: Braised Chicken with Chestnuts

This dish was the star of the night. The chicken was so tender it practically fell off the bone, and because it’s cooked bone-in, the flavour is deep, rich, and beautifully savoury. It comes in a glossy, umami-packed sauce that coats everything generously (think more luscious sauce than British “gravy,” thankfully). The chestnuts were soft and slightly chewy, adding little pockets of sweetness that balanced the richness perfectly.

At £16.80, the portion was more than generous for a single main. My husband and I shared it alongside a side of noodles and were more than satisfied.

The Seasonal Special

We also couldn’t resist trying their Chinese New Year special: a fried lobster tossed with breadcrumbs, dried chillies, and fermented black beans. It was impeccably crispy, spicy, lightly tangy from the black beans, and deeply comforting (so much so that we boxed up leftover breadcrumbs to take home because we weren’t ready to stop eating them).

Pro tip: If you’re dining in, order at least one dish that’s cooked whole or served in a skillet (e.g. the whole fish or any sizzling plate). Watching these arrive at neighbouring tables was a full sensory experience: audible, fragrant, immersive, and impossible to ignore.

Pair It With a Walk

Wutong Hub is also just a five-minute walk from the Vennel Viewpoint, which makes for a perfect post-dinner wander. Views of Edinburgh Castle are arguably even better at night, and well worth the extra stroll.

If you’re craving real-deal Chinese in the Old Town, Wutong Hub is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you didn’t find it sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat are the must-order signature dishes?

AAside from what we tried, common recommendations include the “Wutong Hub” Grilled Sea Bass (a showstopper often shared by groups), Crispy Shredded Beef in Honey Chilli Sauce (a sweet-and-spicy fan favorite), Mao Xue Wang (a traditional spicy Sichuan hot pot dish), and Caramelized Pumpkin Pancakes (frequently mentioned as a unique, popular starter).

QHow spicy is the food?

AWutong Hub’s Sichuan-style dishes are marked with “Spicy” on the menu. The staff are happy to point you toward milder options, and there are plenty to choose from if you prefer to keep things on the gentler side.

QIs it suitable for large groups or bookings?

AYes. The restaurant has a modern, spacious interior compared to some of Edinburgh’s smaller noodle bars, and it can accommodate birthday parties and large business or student gatherings—booking ahead is advised.

QIs it fine dining or casual?

ASomewhere in between—stylish enough for a date, but relaxed enough for a quick lunch.

QAre there good vegetarian or vegan options?

AYes. There’s a dedicated vegetarian section, including a vegetarian version of Mapo tofu. Some reviews claim that if you ask, they may be able to make certain dishes vegan.

QDo they offer delivery and is the quality consistent?

AYes. Wutong Hub is on Uber Eats and Deliveroo (usually with a £10 minimum). The food travels well, but sizzling dishes lose some of their theatre—takeout is just as tasty, but slightly less immersive than dining in.

QDo I need a reservation?

AReservations are accepted and weekends can get busy. Walk-ins usually don’t face long waits, but if you want to play it safe, book ahead.

QIs it kid-friendly?

AYes. There isn’t a dedicated kids’ menu (at least from what I noticed), but families dine comfortably and there are plenty of finger-food-style and simpler options for younger diners.

QDo they accept mobile payments?

AYes—credit and debit cards are accepted, as well as NFC payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
