About L’Artigiano
L’Artigiano is one of those Italian restaurants that feels effortlessly authentic from the moment you step inside. Tucked slughtly away from both Edinburgh's New and Old Town parts, it’s a spot we’ve returned to time and time again for both casual lunches and cosy evening meals. The menu celebrates traditional Italian cooking with handmade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and classic regional dishes prepared with care. The atmosphere strikes a comfortable balance between lively and intimate, while the service is warm, friendly, and refreshingly straightforward. Expect generous portions, honest flavours, and a dining experience that feels genuinely Italian rather than overly polished or staged.
Our Review
Is L’Artigiano worth a visit?
We have ended up at L’Artigiano more times than we can count, which is usually the clearest sign that a restaurant is doing something right. Whether it’s a relaxed meal in the middle of the work day or a cosy evening meal, it’s one of those dependable places that consistently delivers.
The atmosphere is unmistakably Italian from the moment you walk in. The dining room is lively without being chaotic, and the smell of fresh pizza dough and simmering sauces sets the tone immediately. It’s the kind of restaurant where you settle in quickly, order a glass of wine, and forget about the outside world for a while.
What keeps us coming back, though, is the balance between quality and comfort. Nothing feels overly complicated or pretentious. The focus is simply on good ingredients, well-executed dishes, and generous portions.
Service follows that same philosophy. The staff are warm, friendly, and welcoming, but there’s also that classic Italian directness that keeps things moving smoothly. Orders are taken efficiently, shouted across to the open-view kitchen, dishes arrive promptly, and you’re left to enjoy your meal without unnecessary interruptions.
The Must-Order: Any of the homemade pasta dishes
If there’s one thing that stands out at L’Artigiano, it’s the pasta. The handmade pasta dishes have a depth and texture that immediately sets them apart from standard restaurant fare.
The seafood linguine is a particular favourite. The pasta comes perfectly al dente, coated in a light yet deeply flavourful tomato and seafood sauce, with generous pieces of shellfish throughout. It manages to feel both comforting and vibrant at the same time, with the natural sweetness of the seafood carrying the dish. Another good option is the Paccheri all'Amatriciana, a classic Roman pasta dish with a rich tomato and guanciale sauce. Expect a slight kick of chili. Wonderful.
The kitchen is run by the pillars of Italian cooking: simple ingredients, balanced flavours, and letting each component shine rather than overloading the plate.
The Wood-Fired Pizza
While the pasta often steals the spotlight, the wood-fired pizzas deserve just as much attention.
Perfect balance between crisp and chewy, with a subtle char from the oven that gives the dough real character. Toppings lean toward classic Italian combinations rather than experimental ones, which works perfectly here. My husband's favourite, the Tartufata. My favourite, the Diavola.
Pizzas are generous in size, but in true Italian fashion, will not leave you feeling bloated or sluggish like other forms of pizzas may.
Pro tip: If you’re visiting for dinner, order one pasta and one pizza to share. It’s the best way to experience both sides of the kitchen.
A Place You Return To
Some restaurants are exciting once but don’t necessarily call you back. L’Artigiano is the opposite. It’s the sort of place that quietly becomes part of your regular rotation.
It works equally well for a casual weekday meal, a relaxed weekend dinner, or a spontaneous lunch when you happen to be nearby. The consistency, warmth, and authenticity make it easy to recommend to visitors and locals alike.
The Final Verdict
L’Artigiano isn’t trying to reinvent Italian cuisine. Instead, it focuses on doing the classics properly - handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, good wine, and welcoming service - all at reasonable prices.
For us, that combination is exactly why we keep returning, and the reason it can't be anything else than a five-star choice.
