Our Review
Is Spice Grill Worth a Visit?
A craving for South Indian breakfast food is what started our trip to Spice Grill, but a tip-off from a local WhatsApp group about their weekend menu is what officially sold us.
Spice Grill Indian Cuisine is a cozy restaurant tucked inside a bustling neighborhood shopping center and attached to a Dunkin' Donuts. It is family owned-and-operated and you can see the home-cooked care from the minute you walk through the door.
My family of four visited on a Sunday at noon to find a few other families across the booths browsing the menus. While we were dining in, we couldn't help but notice that takeaway orders were absolutely flying off the wall. Spice Grill Jax serves their breakfast special every weekend from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, meaning both the lunch and breakfast menus were available to us. The lunch menu offers many dishes you can't go wrong with, but the make-your-own meal offer is an absolute steal. Starting at $14, you get to pick your choice of curry, protein, type of bread, and dessert. The value was tempting, but our hearts were set on breakfast.
The breakfast menu featured all of our family favorites: massive varieties of dosas, spiced egg dishes, traditional tiffin platters, and my personal favorite, kothu parotta, just to name a few.
The Must-Order: Egg Kothu Parotta
Kothu parotta is a famous South Indian street food. Imagine the buttery flakiness of a croissant packed into a flatbread. That's a parotta. And "kothu" means chopped, so this dish is essentially a flaky flatbread chopped and stir-fried with aromatic spices and scrambled eggs.
The dish arrived overflowing in a massive bowl for under $15, served with a side of velvety salna gravy. Eating it with or without the gravy offers two completely distinct experiences, and I recommend trying both. On its own, the kothu parotta delivers a deeply comforting, rich savory flavor that isn't spicy at all. Pouring the salna over it adds a slight heat, but the smooth undertones of cashew and coconut keep the spice perfectly balanced and from overpowering the dish.
What We Ordered: Menu Items & Expected Pricing
Individual South Indian specialties at Spice Grill generally sit in the $12 to $16 range, making it a budget-friendly option for a high quality lunch or breakfast. Some dishes, such as the egg varieties, even sit below the $10 range. To complete the authentic experience, many of the dishes here come beautifully served on traditional South Indian, thali plates.
Beyond the food, the service made the experience whole. When you're eating South Indian cuisine, the flavor is undoubtedly the star, but what matters almost just as much is how much the person serving you wants you to enjoy it. Spice Grill absolutely delivered on the passion they bring to the table.
The Final Verdict: A Must-try South Indian Breakfast in Northeast Florida
Logistics: The breakfast menu is a weekend-only exclusive (8:30 AM – 2:30 PM) and is dine-in only. The lunch special runs every day the restaurant is open from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm and is also dine-in only. Everything is made fresh to order with real passion from the kitchen, so there might be a short wait. If you're hungry, order a $2 masala chai to sip on in the meantime.
Location: Located in Bartram Park, Spice Grill sits at the perfect gateway between south Jacksonville and St. Johns, Florida. If you're a tourist, it is the ultimate pit-stop. You can easily fuel up here before heading south to explore historic St. Augustine, or stop by on your way back up north to spend the afternoon exploring Jacksonville.
